The Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Required Portfolio

Credit for Prior Learning acknowledges that learning (not experience) is gained from many life paths. Credit for Prior Learning focuses on the non-traditional methods UT Tyler students have already learned content found in existing UT Tyler courses. Students follow a very scripted process to present evidence of their mastering the course learning outcomes for qualified faculty to review this material. Thus, the non-traditional methods of earning academic credit are reviewed by faculty in a consistent, transparent, and methodical manner across the entire university.

UT Tyler Credit for Prior Learning is awarded only through the required portfolio containing evidence of mastery of course learning outcomes, not just having a particular experience or position. The student must clearly document their learning by following the template provided by the student’s academic advisor or available on the Credit for Prior Learning website. This enables UT Tyler to protect the integrity and credibility of UT Tyler programs and academic credits and to ensure that all UT Tyler academic credit awards are determined by qualified faculty in the discipline.
