Credit for Military Training and Experiences

UT Tyler recognizes that military training and experience may be eligible for academic credit when it aligns with established course learning outcomes and degree requirements. Evaluation of military learning is conducted through a coordinated, faculty-driven process in collaboration with the student’s academic advisor, academic departments, the Registrar’s Office, and the Office of Military & Veterans Affairs (MVA).

Military transcripts may include the Joint Service Transcript (JST), the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript, and other official military documentation.
  • CCAF Transcripts (Accredited Credit):
As an accredited institution, CCAF coursework is evaluated through UT Tyler’s established transfer credit processes. Students may request additional review through their academic advisor for specific course applicability within their degree program.
  • JST and Military Training (Non-Accredited Learning):
Military training documented on the JST and similar records is evaluated using guidance from the American Council on Education (ACE), including the ACE Military Guide, to inform potential credit equivalencies.

Evaluation Process

  1. Military transcripts are submitted to and initially reviewed by the Registrar’s Office through standard institutional processes.
  2. The Office of Military & Veterans Affairs (MVA) provides support in interpreting military training and identifying potential equivalencies, particularly for JST and non-traditional learning.
  3. The student’s academic advisor leads the evaluation of how credits apply to the degree program and coordinates any additional review requested by the student.
  4. Academic departments and faculty determine final course equivalencies and applicability to degree requirements.
  5. Approved credits are processed and posted to the student’s academic record by the Registrar.
  6. All credit awarded for military training and experience must align with UT Tyler academic standards and apply to the student’s declared program of study.
