Students majoring in communication sciences and disorders build a foundation in the sciences pertaining to speech, language, hearing, and swallowing. In addition, students survey speech and language disorders including speech sound disorders, fluency disorders, language disorders, and hearing disorders. After earning the Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, students are qualified to seek a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, audiology, or speech and hearing science at accredited programs around the nation. Students wishing to work with their undergraduate CSD degree can pursue employment as speech language pathology assistants or audiology assistants.
The UT Tyler Bachelor of Science in CSD requires a total of 120 undergraduate credits. Of these,36 credit hours must be in communication sciences and disorders (CSD), and 15 credits must cover specified prerequisites required by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Degree Requirements
- Texas Core Curriculum: Students must complete the Texas Core Curriculum (42 hours). Guidance on recommended core curriculum courses can be found in the 8-semester recommended sequence of courses.
- The ASHA prerequisite 15 credit hours may be used to meet the University’s Core requirements.
- Communication Sciences and Disorders Courses: 36 credit hours with a minimum grade of “C”.
- ASHA prerequisite requirements (15 hours).
- Minor if desired. Minors to consider could include education, psychology, or a foreign language.
- Electives to fulfill the remaining hours needed for the full 120-hour graduation requirement.
